Walk Now for Autism Raises $410,000
On Sunday, June 1, 5,500 people walked at Bergen Community College in Paramus, N.J. for the 7th annual Northern New Jersey Walk Now for Autism, representing a 38% growth in participation over last year's event. The walkers, on nearly 270 teams, raised over $410,000.
A number of local personalities spoke during the opening ceremonies, including Dr. G. Jeremiah Ryan, President of Bergen Community College, Paramus Mayor James Tedesco, Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney, Bob Buchmann of Q-104 Radio and Honorary Walk Chair Pat Battle of WNBC News. Following their introductions, Walk volunteer Christine Michaels performed the national anthem. Numerous entertainers joined the festivities, including the Bergenfield High School Ensemble Band, SPARKS – Special Angels Cheerleaders, OWC - One Way Conversation and School of Rock. Walkers enjoyed appearances from the Batmobile, members of the 501st Legion and various costumed characters. Other entertainment for children included bounce houses and carnival games.

The resource fair showcased eight organizations and companies, including Bergen County Sheriff Department with Project Life Saver, Paramus Police Department with Operation Safe Child, Maximum Potential, Goosie Cards, Mt. Sinai Research department, Social Skills Resource Center, and Autos for Autism.
Generous sponsors that contributed to the success of the Northern New Jersey Walk Now for Autism included Toys”R”Us, which displayed the “10 Toys that Speak to Autism” and Nutricia, which provided an information table. Additionally, more than 200 people from the Toys”R”Us corporate office participated in the Walk. Special thanks to returning Walk Chair Michele Lopes and first time Walk Chair Wayne Bardowell for making the 7th annual Northern New Jersey Walk such a success.
